Announcements & Reminders
Vocal & Oratorical Contests
Valuable scholarships are available to students for college based on Rotary competitions in these areas. Please pass the word on to our local students interested in these areas. For details, please visit:
World Polio Day is October 24 each year. Each Rotary member is asked to donate a minimum of $3, which will vaccinate one child. Some of us know people who were or have been affected by this disease, which can be eradicated. Collect your loose change and bring to our meetings, or send a donation to @PennYan-Rotary on Venmo. Better yet, donations are matched 2:1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, tripling your impact. Our point of contact for this is Sue Andersen.
Kudos to all of you in our club--we met our goal of raising enough money to vaccinate 200 children in support of world polio day. We raised over $300 which will be matched!

Mary Sue gave us an update on Soldiers & Sailors Finger Lakes Health program, and the September 14 chicken barbecue was well attended.
Ellie & Sean presented their new business, Highland Tree Farm, opening November 30, 2024 in Branchport. In addition to having a variety of Christmas trees, they will host a christmas market featuring craft beverages and local artisans in converted horse stalls. The farm shares a location with Big Mamou Works & Farm Store and they have a herd of Highland Scottish cows--"coos." They'll be open Saturdays & Sundays through the holidays.

The commons is planned to host five new tenants including a holistic fitness center, Sweat Sanctuary, and property management firm Vacasa, in addition to the four existing tenants. Included in the plan is parking lot repairs, landscaping, clean up, and more upgrades.
Student of the Month
Our Student of the Month is Piper Castner. She is pictured below with Rotary President Alicia Slate, school staff Cassie Johnson and Hannah Keech, and parents Sam and Liz Castner. Piper is an eighth-grader at Penn Yan Middle school who plays clarinet, soccer, lacrosse, and basketball. Her favorite subjects are Biology, technology, and physical education. She does commission work with her father Sam in his metal working studio. Her coach and teacher Hannah Keech described Piper as an "overall leader in school, on the field, and in life. She always does the right thing and is fun to be around, and is kind." Well done Piper!

Please join us in welcoming new members Beth Clark and Joanne Cannavo!
Youth Exchange
Our exchange student, Coline from Belgium, has been active during her stay in Penn Yan so far and has been a wonderful student to host. We are still looking for host families for the new year, so please ask around.
